Artist Bio

Lynda Bunnell is a multifaceted artist and author based in Southern California, known for her layered paintings and intricate pine needle vessels. Her artistic journey has been marked by continuous exploration and evolution.

In 2012, Bunnell expanded her creative expression into the ancient art of weaving pine needle vessels. She harvested and hand-dyed raw materials, deepening her understanding of color and texture. This exploration led to the creation of intricate, nature-inspired vessels that reflect the beauty of organic materials.

A pivotal moment occurred in 2018 during an “art birthday party” organized by a friend. This event sparked a new chapter in her artistic journey, leading her to explore painting with renewed vigor and creativity.

Lynda’s paintings are characterized by their depth and complexity, achieved through a meticulous layering process. She often begins with a minimal color palette, incorporating line work and collage elements to lay the foundation of a narrative. Multiple layers of paint, cold wax, or encaustic are applied, with each layer being sanded back to reveal glimpses of the underlying story. This technique creates a sense of history and texture, reminiscent of weathered surfaces found in ancient European or North African architecture. Her work embodies the concept of “Wabi Sabi,” appreciating the beauty in imperfection and transience.

Lynda has actively engaged with the artistic community, studying privately under renowned artist, Kate McCavitt, and participating in various programs, including the Creative Visionary Program, The Art2life Academy, and The Mark Eanes Academy. Her work has been exhibited in multiple venues, reflecting her commitment to continual growth and community engagement. She is involved with the Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Artist Guild and North Coastal Art Gallery/Carlsbad Oceanside Art League.

Artist Statement

My work is a personal journey of self-discovery, where the path unfolds as I engage in an ongoing dialogue with the art itself. I rarely begin with a specific plan; instead, I create the conditions for a reciprocal exchange. Though my pieces are primarily abstract, an underlying visual order gradually emerges through the process. I work experimentally, allowing the unknown to guide me rather than relying on deliberate decisions. The conversation with the artwork continues until it reaches its natural conclusion, a shared understanding that marks the end of this evolving exchange.”
